DIM SUM FUNERAL, 7:30 pm May 30, 2009

March 18, 2010

Dim Sum Funeral
Saturday May 30, 2009 7:30 pm Collins Hall, Bowen Island
94 mins. PG-13

The next screening at the Film Society features two Vancouver-produced films which coincidentally turn on funereal themes. Now don’t stampede for the exits until you learn that there are far more laughs than tears in this pair of uniquely well-crafted films. “Dim Sum Funeral” debuted at the Whistler Film Festival last December where I saw it. Directed by Anna Chi it delivers many twists and character epiphanies against the backdrop of a traditional Chinese funeral. (See Michael Epp’s review) A very special short, “The Light of Family Burnham” (30 min.), accompanies, also touching on mortality but from a generational perspective. Filmed around the Lower Mainland, the visuals are subtle and evocative. Producer Doug Kerr will be in attendance and will do a Q & A after.

Saturday March 28, 2009 – 7:30 pm Collins Hall, Bowen Island
107 mins. Rated PG.

Okay, exactly how much heart-warming can one pacemaker take anyway? Before you settle it by just getting a by-pass, maybe you should check out “Young@Heart”, the wildly popular feature documentary about seniors in a rock and roll choir who refuse to lay down and die. The word is that this is far more than an amusement based on old folks (average age: 83!) mimicking the young by appropriating their music; there’s an underlying depth that brings new meaning to the lyrics of artists as diverse as James Brown, Coldplay and the Ramones (“I Wanna Be Sedated”).

Legendary filmmaker Woody Allen’s newest film is a sexy, funny and highly potent romantic fantasy imbued with real energy and joie de vivre. Using the iconic Spanish city Barcelona as a stunning backdrop, and a highly acclaimed cast delivering complex and nuanced performances, the film is an architectural, musical and physical celebration of beauty.

“Gotham gives way to Gaudi and the Met to Miro, but the sensibility is the same, the city as a precious treasure, and so is the message: Life may be hard and short, love may be flawed or doomed, but, my, aren’t we blessed with lovely distractions.” Rick Groen, The Globe and Mail

Starting Out In The Evening
Saturday November 29, 2008 7:30 pm
Collins Hall, Bowen Island
111 mins. Rated PG.

Faithful in style and spirit to the award-winning novel of the same name by Brian Morton, this wise, observant, and exquisitely tacit chamber piece counteracts every academic-novel cliché in the book. Against the backdrop of Manhattan’s changing literary and publishing world, aging novelist Leonard Schiller is asked by Heather Wolfe, a graduate student and budding literary critic, to agree to interviews. Throughout their encounters, the core theme of Schiller’s novels is unveiled – life is not designed for our comfort but for our struggle, for in struggle there is growth. Official selection for many international film festivals, this film was also selected as Winner of the National Board of Review Top Ten Independent Films 2007 View the trailer “A rapturous, ruefully funny flight of sympathetic imagination. Featuring the first movie role for Frank Lagella that ranks with his best stage parts, it’s a rare kind of American movie.” Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun

Winner of thirty-six different awards from a variety of international film festivals, this film offers a glimpse into the basic humanity in Middle East communities. On an ordinary day, the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrives in Israel from Egypt for a cultural event, but find themselves stuck in a remote desert until morning without accommodations. As the band settles in as best it can, each of the members attempts to get along with the natives in their own way. What follows is a special night of quiet happenings and confessions as the band and the town impact each other in unpredictable ways. In English, Arabic and Hebrew with subtitles.

“[Writer/director Eran Kolirin's] picaresque humor and witty style are a joy to behold, as is his respect for all quirks of character.” Michael Epp, Bowen Island Undercurrent

“…a warm and delightful take on cross-cultural relations proves that sometimes a light touch is just what’s needed to address serious topics. Novice helmer Eran Kolirin has a playful eye for compositions and a fine touch with thespers…” Jay Weissberg, variety.com

Friday June 27, 2008 7:30 pm Collins Hall, Bowen Island

Make your way over to Collins Hall, Friday June 27 at 7:30 for a memorable evening of short films crafted by our island’s young people. The range of films is quite remarkable: Lego stop-motion animation, comedies, international documentaries shot in Ireland and Nepal, imagistic poetry, dramas, whew! Our kids are such a creative bunch! Organized by Silvaine Zimmermann and the usual suspects on the board of directors this is a showcase full of surprises and remarkable depth and may be the start of an annual event. Bring your budding young film-maker along to be inspired by the productions of their island chums; maybe their films will grace next year’s program. Young film-makers whose projects are included will be given free admission and a certificate of participation. Please call 604-947-0450 to reserve seats, recommended for this screening. The 2008 Bowen Youth Film Gala includes works by: Andrew Cameron, Arthur Szabo, Austin Wrinch, Calder Stewart, Calum Cole, Clancy Sindlinger, Emily Allan, Emmett Sparling, Holly Kasasian, Jake Bagshaw, Kailey Spear, Kyla Jameison, Lacey O’Neill, Lina Martin-Chan, Mariah Fleetham, Megan McPhee, Natasha Wehn, Robyn de Zwart, Ruth Kasasian, Sam Spear, Susanne Curry, Taylor Milne, Tobin Sparling You can get a taste of the Gala on YouTube with the trailer for Natasha Wehn’s comedy, “Till Death Do Us Part” (caution, some coarse language). You can also visit Bowen TV after Tues June 24 to see an interview with the organizers.

The Youth Film Gala is the final event for our 2007-08 schedule. We thank our members for their support in making this a real turnaround year for the Film Society. In addition to bringing fine films to our Bowen audience, we have continued, without resorting to outright kidnapping, to attract film-makers (and even movie stars) from afar to present their films in our rustic auditorium. This year we were honoured to host such luminaries as the directors of the critically acclaimed “King Corn”; Rupinder Nagra, the star of “Amal” who traveled from Toronto for the occasion; as well as local film-makers Jack Silberman and Len Gilday who brought personal perspectives to challenging content. It was a great year. Our new Fall schedule begins with a screening on Sat., Sept. 27.

Emotional Arithmetic – Saturday May 31, 7:30 pm

March 18, 2010

Emotional Arithmetic
Saturday May 31, 2008 7:30 pm Collins Hall,
Bowen Island 99 minutes, Rated 14A

In our troubled times of polarized politics and debilitating war, this extraordinary film (adapted from the novel by the late Matt Cohen) by Canadian director Paolo Barzman asks how we heal emotional wounds that linger after great upheaval. Portrayed by a masterful ensemble cast featuring Susan Sarandon, Christopher Plummer, Max von Sydow, Gabriel Byrne, and Roy Dupuis, the film’s characters gather in the idyllic locale of Quebec’s Eastern Townships to reflect upon another time when the world was in great peril. After being separated during the Second World War, three people must find the strength to face tragedy and reclaim the friendships that transformed their lives. “… Emotional Arithmetic could never be replicated because it is a moment in time when the talent, the setting and the story came together perfectly.” John Powell, Cineplex Entertainment
